Scabies is a contagious disease caused by little mites that burrows under the skin and causes terrible itching that is worse at night. The mites lay eggs and multiply, travelling underneath the skin to places such as the chest, under the arms, in between the fingers, the buttocks, genitals, thighs and ankles. One can develop an allergic reaction to the mite and its eggs & feces. Treatment is curative and many times the entire household needs to also be treated. There have been more cases of resistance to the standard drugs used topically to treat scabies.  Prompt treatment is essential to prevent the spread of this infestation to others and alleviate the severe uncomfortable itch.
